Happy New Year to all of you! This year ends with a perfect day here in the High Tatras. Picture is from today on Strbske Pleso lake.

Last hike?

Yesterday we went for what probably will be the last hike (without skis) this year. A few degrees, fog, 110% humidity and no sun made it a cold experience. We did a 3 km hike which included stop for hot tea at Reinerova cabin, and warm lunch at Bilikova cabin, before we ended our hike at the mountain tram at Hribienok cabin. Bad weather but good food!

Here is Strbske Pleso seen from the main road below where we live. Our house is a few hundred meters to the right from the right edge of the picture. The mountain with snow is Rysy, which is also the Slovak-Polish border. The open areas in the forest are from the storm that hit Tatras about 5 years ago, crushing 50 km2 of forest... And yes, Strbske Pleso is the area around the ski-hill in the center of the picture...

PS: thinking about getting a fancy camera, I see the limit of my mobile phone in such landscape pictures...

For those of you that hasn't seen where we live. Here it is as of today. We wish for a better mountain view so a few of those trees in the background will have to "disappear".

Bear track

Yesterday I was out for a walk from our house, and I became a little bit concerned when I saw the track in the picture above. From what I was able to figure out from the tracks on the path it looked as the bear had gone back into the forest so I continued... Didn't see any more bear tracks or bears. But the tracks were fresh...

We have already seen the first snow in Strbske Pleso this year, and the skiing season is coming soon. Kristina and Magnus are ready to put on both their cross-country and alpine skiis as soon as the opportunitiy is here, and so are their parents. This picture is from 2 seasons ago. Last year we had the longest ski-season in the histroy of Strbske Pleso, it lasted from November until around May 10th. Let's hope for a winter with lots of snow!!
